By the project “ Artist as Found Object”, the concept of repeating the
commune or similarity form or presentation, while they are with
different contexts or medias, challenges the artist to deal with the
fact, if the art piece changes its meaning by viewing from outside and
inside.

Thus we’ve seen quite often, from a beginner performer to Abramovic in
MOMA, many performance artists showing themselves as “living
sculpture” without any concrete or physically obvious actions as a
performative form. Action is concerned in performance art, which is
like materials in other visual arts, that’s why Hungh sees it so
interesting to minimize the decorative part, such as theatrical
movement and literary speeches. Hungh’s attempt here, it is based on
the same form but when we put it in the different category, it brings
him to a deeper though of the language itself, about the definition of
classifying. He acclaims this piece: it is not a performance (the
action should not take any importance); it is not a sculpture (it’s
already made). Instead of calling it “living sculpture”, it is called
“found object”, in order to focus more on the physical part of it,
weather dead or alive.

While Hungh brings up this question, the intention is now toward the
physical part. It could be a critic of critic: The critics are suppose
to judge this piece by its outlook, the fine details of human body or
the colors and ignore anything which is not showing here because of
the impersonal rencontre and materialized presentation. People who
know the artist or this object beforehand are of course easier
figuring out the specific part of interests, but then another question
is raised to this: While lacking of information how could we
appreciate (or not )art? How far can a critic goes?

Human body is never neutral because we all have connections to other
ones, combining memories, experiences and educations we could easily
prejudge someone, link to like, to hate, to fall in love or other
sensual thoughts. Trying to remove the actions from a living form is
impossible, because the heartbeats and breath are always going on. The
object itself will be as itself, everything shown is included to the
subject, in one side the artist “programs” the object to let it
express by the intention of the artist, another side the nature of the
object is also thought to take part. These opposites is confronting
the artist and the object, and making conflicts while being viewed. It
is conflictive between “performing art” and so call “performance art”
or “live art”, even it is not defined as performance for the artist
self.

Living art is dead, object is alive.

LIEBIG12 is proud to announce the first edition of a performative exhibition in Berlin.

We are offering the opportunity for artists and critics to come together for an exposing event.
A live discussion will take place during the opening day
(4th December 2011) led by the participating critics and the audience on a stage / plinth created by the artist Catriona Robertson
(the curator of this happening, in collaboration with Liebig12 - Kunstraum run by the artist Allegra Solitude).

Each artist will present their work and have their work reviewed live by the critics.

The stage represents the plinth, a platform for art, and the stage as a platform for a performance.

The review will be an open discussion, which could also be seen as a performance in itself.

The work the artist chooses to show will become a part of an entire performance through the presence of the artist, the work, the critic and the audience, and most importantly the atmosphere created by the tone of the review (positive and negative).

L’art avec un grand A… Le salon Parcours d’artistes fête ses dix ans, venez découvrir le meilleur de l’art contemporain, à portée de main ! Aux Passerelles, du 5 novembre au 16 décembre.
Des artistes qui font l’actualité de l’art contemporain et des amateurs qui développent des projets très personnels exposeront leurs œuvres. Toutes les disciplines sont représentées : peinture, photographie, sculpture…

Jerusalem Show is an annual art and cultural event in the old city of Jerusalem. This year's programme, titled on/off Langugae, will include a curated programme of performances, exhibitions, talks and workshops at a number of venues in the old city and Salah el din area, as well as events in Ramallah, in addition to a screening programmed curated by Victoria Perez Royo.

From the 8th -11th of Sept 2011

The Grimmuseum is once again teaming up with Tupajumi Foundation to organize the second FITAX1500 in Berlin,

offering an alternative way of wheeling and dealing art during the artfair week.

The goal of the event is the direct exchange of art works between collectors and artists without any intermediate.

There will be over 50 participants,

a grand mixture of artists and collectors,

invited by Grimmuseum or selected by Tupajumi after a sign up procedure.

so be quick to enlist and to get selected.

The artworks can be made by or owned by the applicant.

It needs to have an approximate value of 1.500 euro.

This can be one artwork or perhaps 2 artworks which will be traded as one

This time though we will do it a slightly different,

on the 8th of Sept we wil open the FITAX1500, (19-23hrs)

The artworks from the participants should (at this stage) be present at the Grimmuseum.

This will be start of the ON-VIEW

The artworks will remain hanging until the actual trade-event commences on the 11th.

During the next 3 days we will add artworks from artists & collectors whom we met during the Artfair Weekend.

So that on Sunday (17-22hrs) the Grimmuseum will be full of Artworks ready to be traded off amongst the participants.

With two outstanding performance artists - Lan Hung and Márcio Carvalho - we are celebrating the closing of the successful exhibition NOMADIC SETTLERS - SETTLED NOMADS.

I 'm Here to Hear ; I 'm There to Dare by Lan Hungh is working with the memories of adventure from the homeland to a foreign country. Is it the destiny of the artist not to be in his own country or is this just a self-made illusion to run away from everything? Different judgements to the same action or same judgements to different actions?

The corner is a durational performative work by Márcio Carvalho, that reflects about conditions of mobility and art making. This is the last project in the trilogy of works named "On Nomadic" where the artist started to work from outside its culture to enter deeply in his environment and in its daily life conditions.

NOMADIC SETTLERS - SETTLED NOMADS is open from 12-19h, the Finissage with the two long durational performances starts at 19.00 on the 28.8.2011

Peep Show will showcase works by artists that engage with erotic or voyeuristic themes. These artworks manifest themselves in many different media and reflect the extreme visual environment we now live in. There are thousands of sexual images only a mouse “click“ away on the internet. This visual source allows us to anonymously enter into worlds without physically participating in them. In a very similar way the „PeepShow“ boxes in forner times played a comparable role. We tend to associate these sidewalk shows with something naughty or forbidden triggering a playful response which is reflected in the artworks themselves.

Hunger - International Performance Festival

From 7. to 21. May, 2011, the International Performance Art Festival will take place in Berlin for the fifth time. The Festival is a unique art festival, with workshops, labs and performances, is among the most important platforms for performance art.

Over 100 Berlin and international artists will present themselves in a performance marathon. During the kick-off on May 14 and 15, it will be possible to see what constitutes performance art: spontaneous creativity, confrontation, experiments, in short: artists in real-time.

What takes place can then serve as inspiration for all interested individuals. Performance labs with the artists will give participants the opportunity to pursue their own creative impulses and to present the results to the public in the finale on May 20 and 21. All info about artists>
Why hunger?
Hunger is stimulus, greed, desire. Hunger makes people inventive. How is the hunger for movement, for expression transposed in the creative process? Is it necessary to cultivate hunger in a sated society? How will it influence us?

IDOLONSTUDIO have the pleasure to invite you to our WEEKENDHAUS #6.

WEEKENDHAUS is a 10 session projects and 10 artists invited to submit works in conjunction with traditional family home to representation through their create idea. The exhibition takes place in an apartment inhabited.

On this evening IDOLONSTUDIO is pleased to present "Mirror" (live art) by Lan Hungh & Irene Pascual.

Lan Hungh graduated from Taiwan University of Arts. His practice consists of performance, music, installations, videos, sculptures and curatings, explores the concept of the everyday and life's intimacies. With a mixture of culture his performance functions as a diary and incorporates music and movement of personal experience. His works have reached New York, London, Taiwan, Tokyo, Berlin, Nice, Cologne, Paris, Qadar, Martinique, Switzerland and Italy, important festivals such as Venice Biennale and New York Biennale Art.

Irene Pascual was born in Girona, Spain, in 1976. She graduated in Art History from the University of Girona, in Stage Design from the Institut del Teatre, Barcelona, and in Stage Design Studies at the Universitat der Kunste, Berlin. She also studied at the School of Fine Arts, Girona with Vicente Hudeo (drawing) and Montserrat Costa (painting). Irene’s exhibitions, short movie projects and involvement with contemporary dance performances, have taken her all over the world. She is also a successful set designer, with many productions to her credit. Her recent shows have taken place in Berlin, Mexico, Luxembourg and Finland.

The exhibition will open doors with an organized gathering. Therefore we look for your input for this event, may it be through performances, concerts or talks. And since we found the Schmiede 2010 theme “Discontent” to be a very powerful topic - we want to further elaborate and work with - we encourage Berlin Smiths to hand in works that deal with that term. “Discontent” currently represents a global state of mind, that both connects the Smiths and enables them to work with their individual identities.
All different kinds and media of art can be handed in, but please understand that while we have a fairly big venue set up for the event, we still want to give as many artists as possible the possibility to show material. So please understand that we probably can't except works of huge proportions. But of course this depends on the number of works submitted to us.

For the sixth Series of Extension Andrés Galeano invites two very dynamic and productive artists: the Chinese Yingmei Duan and the Bosnian Ivan Civic. After their last long-durational performance projects: Yingmei Duan working intensively in a children hospice in UK and Ivan Civic’s daily performance Shedding Time at the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, the two artists will share a short residence at Grimmuseum and, respectively, exhibit the outcome of their latest artistic researches to the Berlin audience.

Capacitive sensors in the surface of the panels measure the electric field of the environment and the direct contact (even through window glass) and generate web-like pattern.

The images are reminding natural phenomena and have a calming effect on the viewer.

The installation is accompanied by weekly-change presentations by five Berlin video artist.

The Idea

It began with an unexpectedly explosive chainletter and ended with a group exhibition, selfcurated by the berlin art scene, in an unusual and fascinating space of the Markthalle IX Eisenbahnstraße, Berlin-Kreuzberg. 12 historical market stalls and 1000 square metres of space are available for the artistic projects. Our aim: to collaborate with a selected group of artists to transform the space. As an independent activity parallel to the art fairs ArtForum and ArtPreview Berlin, "SCHNELL & SCHMUTZIG" is a four day programme created to showcase multi-disciplinary art forms, designed to inspire both artists and viewers alike.

The Unexpected Email

Will you be selected as an exhibitor or a curator? The project began with an unexpected email sent out into the Berlin art scene. We wanted to learn how the scene understands and defines itself outside the system of galleries, collectors and art institutions. To try and crystalise the answer we asked each artist to forward the unexpected email to five other artists. At the end of the campaign those artists with the most recommendations were invited to form the curatorial team for SCHNELL & SCHMUTZIG. Within 10 days we received 2500 emails and from the recommendations following artists emerged as the curators of SCHNELL & SCHMUTZIG:

The old Market Hall IX

The Markhalle IX was built in 1890/1 to replace the weekly market in Lausitzer Platz, it was used daily for over 100 years in Kreuzberg. It is one of the very last original market halls with this unique architecture.

Through a local grass roots movement the future of the Markthalle is being reconsidered. At the beginning of this year the building was occupied for 2 days by local residents to push this issue into the political agenda. Half a year later the local movement has achieved an agreement with Berliner Grossmarkt GmbH to use this space for cultural initatives.

SCHNELL & SCHMUZIG is defined by freedom, passion, creativity, and action.

Künstler versteigern ihre Werke – die Initiative greift die aktuelle Tendenz zur Selbstorganisation von Künstlern auf und geht noch einen Schritt weiter.
Parallel zur renommierten Kunstmesse Art Forum Berlin nimmt ein Team von sieben Kunstproduzenten den Verkauf eigener Werke selbst in die Hand. Rund 20 Arbeiten stehen im Rahmen einer Versteigerung zur Disposition. Das Motto von Ausstellung und Auktion: “Wie es Euch gefällt” reagiert auf die Ambivalenz von Vielfalt und Beliebigkeit am Markt, Kundengefälligkeit inklusive.

Seit den 90er Jahren werden am Kunstmarkt zum Teil exorbitante Preise erzielt. Gerät Kunst zum Spekulationsobjekt, wird die Frage: “Auf welches Pferd soll ich setzen?” für Kunstinvestoren schnell zum Zünglein an der Waage.
Was aber, wenn Künstler die üblichen Marktmechanismen auf den Prüfstand stellen? Bei einer Auktion im Jahr 2008 bei Sotheby’s nahm der hoch gehandelte britische Künstler Damien Hirst die Versteigerung seiner Werke selbst in die Hand – mit Erfolg. Trotz globaler Krise erzielte BEAUTIFUL INSIDE MY HEAD FOREVER einen Höchstertrag von 95 Mio. Pfund!

“Wie es Euch gefällt” ist ein Angebot von KünstlerInnen an potentielle Kunstkäufer. Sie gehen mit ihrer Kunst auf den Markt, ohne eine Galerie oder ein Auktionshaus zwischenzuschalten. Produzenten und Rezipienten rücken auf diese Weise näher zusammen.
Die Auktion am Ende der einwöchigen Ausstellung ist eine Option und Offerte, um sensible Themen wie Wertempfinden und Preisfindung dem tatsächlichen Bedarf anzupassen. Mit ihrem flexiblen Preisfindungsmechanismus liegt sie im Vergleich zu willkürlich festgesetzten Preisen, die oft keiner mehr nachvollziehen kann, entschieden im Vorteil. Angebot und Zahlungsbereitschaft sind in dem Fall nicht mehr voneinander abgekoppelt, sondern leiten einen unmittelbaren Austausch ein.
Ziel der Auktion am 9. Oktober ist auch Kunstinteressenten anzusprechen, die vorher noch nie ein Original gekauft haben. Die Ausrufpreise beginnen bei 100 € für ein Gemälde bzw. bei 50 € für eine Fotografie.

Ein Auktionator führt durch den Abend und bezieht dabei Telefonbieter wie stille Bieter mit ein. Am Abend der Vernissage am 2. Oktober und an den darauf-folgenden Tagen bis zur Versteigerung als Höhepunkt der Initiative besteht die Möglichkeit, sämtliche Versteigerungsobjekte aus den Bereichen Malerei, Skulptur, Fotografie und Dokumentation von Performances zu begutachten.

Der performative Aspekt als weiteres wichtige Handlungsmotiv kommt im Rahmen der Auktion ebenfalls nicht zur kurz. Für den Performancekünstler Lan Hungh, neben Anna Vonnemann Hauptiniator von “Wie es Euch gefällt”, steht die Auktion als theatrale Inszenierung von Marktmechanismen und Galeriebetrieb klar im Mittelpunkt. Auch in diesem Sinne sind die Präsentation der Werke und der Verlauf der Versteigerung mehr als nur Mittel nur Zweck.

Juan Arata, geboren in Argentinien, lebt in Berlin. Erfolge als Künstler, Kurator, Filmemacher und Professor für Architektur und Design.

Lan Hungh, geboren in Taiwan, lebt in Berlin. Er studierte Musik in Paris. Nach seiner ersten Ausstellung als Kurator bei Gallery 33 (Berlin) wurde er als Künstler bei der Parallele (Venedig Biennale) eingeladen.
Gezeigte Werke: Drei Fotografien, ein Objekt (TV Bildschirm und diverse Materialien)

Philippe Marcus, geboren in Frankreich, lebt in Paris und Berlin.
Gezeigte Werke: Zwei Bilder (Malerei, Acryl auf Leinwand)

Miron Schmückle, geboren in Rumänien, kam 1988 nach Deutschland und lebt in Berlin. Er hatte einen Lehrauftrag an der Sankt Petersburger Theaterakademie INTERSTU-DIO und zahlreiche Arbeitstipendien, u. a. Habana und Worpswede.
Gezeigte Werke: Eine Fotografie (auf Alubond), und sechs handkolorierte Drucke (Papier).

Die Atmosphäre steht zwischen uns und dem Weltall, dem riesigen Unbekannten. Bekannt ist sie uns, da wir sie in unserem alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch benutzen. Sie begleitet uns. Die Atmosphäre ist die Lehre des sinnlichen Spürens - sensibel reagieren unsere Sinne auf das, was uns umgibt. Wir spiegeln uns in den Dingen, die wir wahrnehmen, die wir bemerken aus der Masse möglicher Eindrücke. Ein zweites Mal konzentriert sich die Gruppenausstellung atmosphärezwei auf Arbeiten, die alltägliche Phänomene wahrnehmen und analysieren. Das Licht kann eine Grenze sowie einen Übergang von verschiedenen Räumen, Realitäten und Gedanken bedeuten. Diese Kapazität wurde von Francesca Banchelli in eine raumbezogene Installation umgesetzt. In der plakatierten Fotografie von Massimo Ricciardo definiert Licht, zusammen mit der Bewegung, die finale Expression. Bei Lan Hungh lässt das einfallende Licht sein Objekt, einen Nagelklipper, schwebend wirken. Er kehrt somit zur Substanz der einstigen Skizze zurück. Claudia Olendrowicz konzipiert ein Objekt über das Element Wind. Gegeben/rational begleitet der Wind Gedanken, stützt Stimmungen, lässt Ahnungen zu, speichert Erinnerungen. Atmosphärisch aufgeladen kehren die Dinge zu ihren Wurzeln zurück und präsentieren sich in ihrer natürlich, rationalen Form. Die Zusammenstellung der Ausstellung ist angelehnt an das System Basis/Atmosphäre = raumbezogene Arbeit/drei weitere künstlerische Arbeiten/die Elemente. Objektiv ist das Gefüge hergestellt, ob sich tatsächlich eine Atmosphäre entwickelt und was die wahre Gestalt dieses Begriffs ausmacht, soll dem Betrachter als nachwirkende Frage bestehen bleiben.

In der Wahrnehmung spürt das Ich nicht nur die Anwesenheit von etwas, sondern es spürt es leiblich und spürt sich dabei auch selbst.

It stands between us and the universe, the gigantic unknown. It is known to us as we use it in our everyday life, it accompanies us. The atmosphere is the theory of the sensual awareness – the senses are activated, they react sensitively towards what stands in the space. We reflect ourselves in the things we are perceiving; the ones we notice among the mass of possible impressions.

For the second time a group exhibition atmospheretwo concentrates upon everyday phenomena and its atmosphere in a sensitive way. Light underlines the perception of borders – borders of space, borders of thought. This capacity has been processed into a site specific installation by Francesca Banchelli. On the placarded photograph of Massimo Ricciardo light, that together with movement, forms and defines the body and the final expression. The occurring light lets Lan Hungh’s nail clipper to look airy, it returns to its substance, to the former sketch. Claudia Olendrowicz reflects upon the wind phenomenon, given or rational it supports moods, it provides foreshadowing of what will happen. It stores memories. Atmospherically charged, the things are turning back towards their roots and present themselves in their natural, rational form. The combination of the works in the exhibition are following the system base/atmosphere = site specific artist work/three other artistic works - elements. Objectively the structure has been formed. If the atmosphere will be surely developed and what the real shape of the term atmosphere is about, that will be left as a question for the spectator.

In the perception the ego is not only feeling the presence from something, rather it senses it bodily and senses itself thereby.

We are please to announce the Out Of Control Opening Number III featuring artists Lan Hungh and
Philippe Marcus plus special performances by Joakim Stampe, Chuyia Chia and Marisa Benjamin

Out of control is a project that focuses on the process of artists curating artists. It intends to experiment
with the chain of trust and taste that artists have in each other. The procedure is simple: one artist both
selects and curates another artist who selects and curates the next, and so forth.

Out of control is a series of exhibitions during Show Number VI in the MMX Open Art Venue, the goal
of which is to establish a continuous chain of selection-curation that will generate a final group of artists.
Every Wednesday one artist will leave the gallery as a new one is introduced by his or her own
artist/curator. Although these exhibitions will be consecutively staged, they will ultimately converge in one
traditional group show consisting of selected works from each participating artist. We expect to reach a
certain level of quality and professionalism during this operation though this will depend entirely on each
artist and his or her way of choosing and developing of the curation process.

MMX Open Art Venue, will host the show from August 27th (general opening) to October 10th (general
finissage). The gallery will be open each week from Wednesday to Sunday from 12Hs to 19Hs.

The Out of control Project can be viewed in the first two rooms of the gallery.
The last artist will start the next exhibition at a date to be announced.

The performance was presented on the 30th Oct, 2010, at “Art is action/action is production”, in Tabacalera, Madrid

It is a 12 hours durational performance.

-Using the objects from the abandoned room in Tabacalera, weight them on the scale, to imitate the clock's finger.
-The clock time is two hours later than the real time.
-The room was untouched since he came till the performance begins.
-A cap, a pair of socks, a pair of shoes, and an overall were found during the performance.
-He wore those clothes step by step, as transforming to the spirit of the room.
-The last 30 Kilos, he began to use only body, to hold the scale finger.
-He finished 2 minutes before the scale's finger totally went around.
-An projection of the objects when they were in the room was projected aside.

Die ukrainische Multi-Media Künstlerin Alina Kopytsa untersucht und verarbeitet während ihres Aufenthaltes in Berlin materielle Aussonderungen urbaner Kultur. Ausgehend von den Eigentümlichkeiten des hiesigen Straßenlebens und seiner Objektkultur entwickelt Alina eine Serie von Gegenständen des täglichen Bedarfs, gefertigt aus Abfall.
Die Künstlerin wird zur Eröffnung anwesend sein, über ihre Arbeiten Auskunft geben und über die ukrainische Kunst-Szene berichten.
Ihre Schau im Raum Junge Kunst der Galerie ´ratskeller´ Lichtenberg ist in diesem Jahr die erste einer Ausstellungsreihe internationaler Kunstschaffender im Rahmen des Künstleraustauschprogramms bei Kunst-Stoffe -Zentralstelle für wieder verwendbare Materialien e.V. in Zusammenarbeit mit der Galerie ´ratskeller´ Lichtenberg.

Saturday May 29, from 7 pm, the international group of curators, musicians and artists of the Old Brewery, Landsberger Allee 54, Berlin-Friedrichshain invite you to R.E.D. - A festive evening of performance- and light art, concerts, dj-sets, fashion performance, visuals, video art, live painting and exhibitions.

Not to be mistaken for a Socialist meeting extolling artistic victim culture, R.E.D. rather stands for the "Rapturous Extension of Disciplines," and aims to be a highly interactive, multi-disciplinary happening, committed to Dionysian politics, if any. As a color, red stands for vitality, empowerment, passion, the morally and sexually forbidden, as such it's fitting theme for this joint Spring art event.

With exhibition spaces of the architectonic landmark building spanning 1000 square meters open up to the public, and numerous concerts and performances, it promises to be a vibrant evening.

Ein Abend der Performances, live Musik, dj-sets, fashion performances, visuals, live painting, Videoinstallationen und Ausstellungen zu einem interaktiven Gesamtkunstwerk verknüpft und Künstler sowie Besucher zu einer aktiven Teilnahme einlädt.

R.E.D ist nicht etwa zu verwechseln mit einem Kürzel für einen sozialistischen Zirkel, der sich der Hervorhebung der Opferrolle von Künstlern verschrieben hat, sondern steht für "Rapturous Extension of Disciplines". Intention der beteiligten Künstler, Musiker und Kuratoren ist es ein aktionistisches, interaktives, multidisziplinäres Happening zu veranstalten, dass sich eher an der Dionysischen Politik orientiert als an realgeschichtlichen Ereignissen und politischen Tendenzen.

Symbolisch steht R.E.D für Vitalität, politische und sexuelle Selbstbestimmung, Leidenschaft und für das, was der deskriptive Begriff von Moral als unmoralisch sowie sexuell verwerflich bewertet. Versehen mit dieser Konnotation bildet R.E.D den idealen Ausgangspunkt und Auftakt für eine Reihe von Events, die in diesem und nächstem Jahr von LA54 realisiert werden.

Mit einer Ausstellungsfläche von 1000 qm, die von den teilnehmenden Künstlern bespielt wird und die den Besuchern für Erkundungen auf eigene Faust offen steht, verspricht R.E.D ein lebendiger und vielschichtiger Abend zu werden.

GLOW II: Rites of Spring

GLOW manifests from a winter’s hearth of cinematic program and video installation to a new program exploring the rite of spring's luminescence and life. Hedonism, transcendence, utopias (lost and found), idylls and euphoria(s) explored.

Over 20 artists from Berlin and the international arena will participate in the program.

The narrative program will begin every two hours in the intimacy of The Z-Bar Kino, while non-narrative works play in the main room throughout.

Marzia Frozen freut sich, eine internationale Gruppenausstellung einer neuen Generation von zeitgenössischen Künstlern ankündigen zu können. Diese Gruppenausstellung findet in der Galerie FRIEDRICHSHÖfE in Berlin statt und zeigt eine Auswahl von Gemälden , Skulpturen, Fotografien, Performances und Videos.

Zensur existiert noch heute. 500 Jahre sind vergangen, seit Michelangelo Buonarroti verboten wurde, nachdem er die Sixtinische Kapelle bemalte. „Das Jüngste Gericht“ wurde zum Objekt eines erbitterten Streit zwischen Kardinal Carafa und Michelangelo. Der Künstler wurde der Unmoral und Obszönität angeklagt, weil er nackten Figuren darstellte. Eine Zensur Kampagne (bekannt als "Feigenblatt-Aktion") wurde von Carafa und Monsignore Sernini (Botschafter von Mantua) organisiert um die Fresken wieder verschwinden zu lassen. Als der Zermonienmeister des Papstes Biagio da Cesena behauptete, „dass die meisten Darstellungen in denen sich die Figuren so beschämend entblößten unwürdig für einen solch heiligen Ort seien und diese Arbeit eher für Tavernen und öffentliche Bäder geeignet seien als für eine heilige Kirche. Anschließend ließ Michelangelo dies in die Szene als Minos, Richter der Unterwelt einfließen.Er beschwerte sich beim Papst und empfand die Lage als einfach nur traurig. Der Papst antwortete seine Verfügungsgewalt schließe die Hölle nicht mit ein und folglich habe das Werk zu bleiben wie es ist.Der Genitalbereich des Fresken wurde später von dem Künstler Daniele da Volterrra bedeckt, der von der Geschichte bei seinem Spitznamen „Il Bragetttone“ (Der Lückenmaler) in Erinnerung blieb.

Francisco de Goya musste die Zensur mit seinem Bild „La Maja Desnuda“ erdulden, in der englischen Sprache als „die nackte Maja“ bekannt. Es handelt sich um ein in Öl auf Canvas Gemälde, porträtiert wird eine nackte Frau die auf einem Bett mit vielen Kissen liegt. Das Werk entstand zwischen 1797 und 1800 und wird manchmal als das erste klare Gemälde in der westlichen Malerei bezeichnet, indem weibliche Schamhaare zu sehen sind. Goya entwarf ein weiteres Bild mit einer Frau in der gleichen Pose, allerdings war sie bekleidet, daher der Name „La Maja Vestida“ (Die bekleidete Maja). Und das obwohl sie im Prado gewöhnlich neben dem Bild der nackten Maja hing. Die Identität des Models und warum die Bilder entworfen wurden ist immer noch nicht bekannt. Beide Bilder wurden zunächst als Besitz in der Sammlung des Premier Ministers Manuel de Godoy festgehalten, Graf von Alcudia und es wurde gemutmaßt, es handele sich um eine junge Frau mit der Godoy eine Affäre hatte. Es wurde ebenso vermutet, bei der auf dem Bild zu sehenden Dame handele es sich um eine gewisse Pilar Teresa Cayetana de Silva y Alvarez de Toledo, die 13. Gräfin von Alba, die mit Goya laut einigen Gerüchten in einer romantischen Beziehung gestanden haben soll. Wie auch immer, einige Experten haben diese Behauptung zurückgewiesen, unter anderem der australische Kunstkritiker Robert Hughes der dies in seiner 2003 erschienen Biographie festhielt, dass es sehr wahrscheinlich eher um eine Frau Namens Pepita Tudo handeln könnte. Andere wiederum glauben, es könnte sich um eine Figur handeln die von mehreren Frauen inspiriert sein könnte. 1815 befahl die Spanische Inquistition Goya offen zu legen, wer ihn beauftragte das Bild „Las Maja Desnuda“ zu malen. Folglich wurde er aus seiner Position als Maler des Spanischen Hofes abgesetzt.Ob Goya jemals den Namen des Auftragsgebers preis gab ist niemals Aktenkundig geworden. Zwei Reihen von Briefmarken wurden 1930 in Ehren für Goyas Werk gedruckt und später von der Spanischen Post Verwaltung autorisiert. Im selben Jahr verweigerte die Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten die Annahme und Weiterleitung von Briefen die mit Briefmarken zu Ehren Goyas Briefmarken versehen waren und sendete die Post zurück.

In 1907 malte der in Paris lebende Spanische Künstler Pablo Picasso „Les Demoiselles d Avignon, für ein unverdächtige Öffentlichkeit. Die Schockwellen, die seine Arbeit aussendete, war bei weitem einfacher positiv aufzunehmen als die ästhetische Herausforderung der Impressionisten einige Dekaden zuvor. Picasso ersetzte die nackte, nicht als bedrohend anzusehende Frau, wie es den Anschein hatte, mit einem Gruppenportrait von Prostituierten, und er tat es in einer Art die nicht den Stil seiner westlichen Vorfahren wieder spiegelte, aber gerade aus der Sicht der Zeitgenossen die die Perspektive der nicht europäischen Blickwinkels hatten, von denen als primitiv bezeichnet wurde.
Im Jahr 1915 sorgten anarchistische Mitglieder der Dada-Bewegung für Chaos in der Schweiz. Ihre Auswirkungen breiteten sich in ganz Europa und schlugen ihre Wurzeln in Deutschland. Zwei der bekanntesten deutschen Dada-Befürworter sind Otto Dix (1891-1969) und George Grosz (1893-1959), aus deren Werk das Genre der Neuen Sachlichkeit hervorging, und deren Anspruch an die soziale und politische Satire sich in Dix „Erinnerung an die Spiegelsääle von Brussel“ (1920 )ausdrückt. Diese Arbeiten wurden von den Nationalsozialisten , zusammen mit denen vieler ihrer Zeitgenossen, als entartet angesehen. Dadaismus fand seinen Weg nach New York mit der dortigen Schlüsselfigur, dem Französisch-amerikanischen Künstlers Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). Im Jahr 1917 schuf er sein vielleicht bekanntestes Werk „Fountain“- Ein Urinal, unterzeichnet mit einem der Pseudonyme, unter denen er arbeitete, R. Mutt. Mit dieser Arbeit, die von der ersten Ausstellung der New York Society of Independent Artists ausgeschlossen wurde, schuf Duchamp gleichzeitig das erste Ready-made und entfachte die " but is it art?" Debatte, die bis heute andauert.
Surrealismus wurde aus dem Dada geboren und hatte seinen Ursprung 1924 mit der Veröffentlichung der Manifeste du Surralisme von Andr Breton (1896-1966); das Zentrum lag zunächst in Paris der 1920er und 1930er Jahre. Das berühmteste Vermächtnis des Surrealismus sind die gerade veröffentlichten detaillierten Phantasien des Spaniers Salvador Dali (1904-89). Gemälde wie Hallucination Partielle: Six Images de Lenine sur un Piano (1931) wirken nicht nur auf den Betrachter herausfordernd, sondern auch verstörend.

Piss Christ ist ein Fotografie der Fotografin Andres Serrano aus dem Jahr 1987. Es zeigt ein kleines Kruzifix aus Kunststoff, das ein Glas mit Urin des Künstlers bedeckt . Das Werk gewann den "Award of Visual Arts" des Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art's die zum Teil von der National Endowment for the Arts, unterstützt wird , einer staatlichen Agentur der US-Regierung, die Unterstützung und Finanzierung für künstlerische Projekte bietet.
Das Werk löste im Jahr 1989 mit seiner Ausstellung einen Skandal aus. Die Gegner, darunter US-Senator Al D'Amato und Jesse Helms, empörten sich darüber, dass Serrano 15.000 $ erhielt. Ein Teil davon kam von der vom Steuerzahler finanzierten National Endowment for the Arts. Befürworter argumentierten, Piss Christ ist eine Frage der künstlerischen Freiheit und Meinungsfreiheit. Andere behaupteten, dass die Regierung mit der Finanzierung von Piss Christ die Trennung von Staat und Kirche verletzt.
Die Kunstkritikerin und katholische Nonne Schwester Wendy Beckett erklärte in einem Fernseh-Interview mit Bill Moyers, dass sie die Arbeit als nicht blasphemisch ansah, sondern in ihr eine Erklärung des Themas "Was haben wir Christus angetan" - die Art und Weise, mit der die heutige Gesellschaft mit Christus und die Werte, die er vertritt, umgeht.
Während einer Retrospektive von Serrano's Arbeit an der National Gallery of Victoria im Jahre 1997 strengte der damalige Erzbischof von Melbourne, George Pell, eine Unterlassungsklage am Supreme Court of Victoria an, der die National Gallery of Victoria davon abhalten sollte, Piss Christ öffentlich zu zeigen.. Einige Tage später versuchte ein Besucher die Arbeit von der Wand der Galerie zu entfernen, und zwei Jugendliche vesuchten es später einem Hammer zu zerstören. Der Direktor der NGV sagte die Ausstellung schließlich ab, angeblich aus Sorge um eine Rembrandt-Ausstellung, die zur gleichen Zeit ausgestellt wurde.
Piss Christ war auch Bestandteil von "Down by Law“, einer "show innerhalb einer show " über die Identität der Politik und des Ungehorsams, die ein Teil der 2006 Whitney Biennale war. Die BBC-Dokumentation „Damned in the USA“ behandelt die Kontroverse um Piss Christ.

Im Juni 1989 wurde der Künstler Blair Lowell Nesbitt ein einen Skandal um die Arbeiten von Mapplethorpes gezogen. Die Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC hatte zugesagt, eine Solo-Wanderausstellung von Mapplethorpes Werk zu zeigen, ohne Kentniss darüber, worum es sich dabei handeln würde. Mapplethorpe beschloss eine neue Serie zeigen, die er kurz vor seinem Tod untersucht hatte. Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Momentwurde kuratiert von Janet Kardon vom Institut für zeitgenössische Kunst. Die Führung des Corcoran und mehrere Mitglieder des Kongresses waren entsetzt, als die Werke zum ersten mal sahen und das Museum weigerte sich, sie zu zeigen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt erklärte Nesbitt, ein langjähriger Freund von Mapplethorpe, öffentlich, dass er 1,5 Millionen Dollar dem Museum vermachen würde, und wenn das Corcoran die Ausstellung nicht zeigen würde, er dies wieder rückgängig machen würde. Das Corocan lehnte die ab und Nesbitt vermachte das Geld stattdessen an die Phillips Collection.
Nachdem die Corcoran die Ausstellung von Mapplethorpe verweigerte, wandten sich die Unterstützer an das nichtkommerzielle Washington Project for the Arts, das die umstrittenen Bilder schiesslich in eigenen Räumen vom 21 Juli - 13 August 1989 zeigte. Unter grossem Publikumsinteresse.

In 1999 wurde die Ausstellung „Sensation“ in New York City im Brooklyn Museum of Art gezeigt. Die New Yorker Ausstellung traff sofort auf Protest in dessen Zentrum die Heilige Jungfrau Maria von Chris Ofili stand, die vorher in London keine Provokation hervorgerufen hatte. Die Presse berichtete, dass das Werk mit Elefantendung verschmiert sei, in Wirklichkeit zeigte Ofilis Arbeit eine sorgfältig gemachte schwarzen Madonna, die mit Harz-Nachbildungen von Elefantendung dekoriert war. Die Figur ist zudem von kleinen collagierten Bildern von weiblichen Genitalien aus pornografischen Magazinen umgeben; sie erscheinen aus der Distanz als der traditionelle Cherubim.
Es war Chris Ofili, der sich im Mittelpunkt der Entrüstung New York befand. Ofili erzeugte bereits eine Kontroverse, als er 1998 den Turner Prize gewann. Seine Mixed-Media-Arbeiten stützten sich auf seine nigerianische Herkunft und sind durch ihre Einbeziehung von Elefantendung gekennzeichnet. Der Fokus der Empörung war die heilige Jungfrau Maria (1996): Eine mixed media Malerei / Collage einer schwarzen Madonna, von Bildern von Hintern umgeben, mit dem Zusatz des allgegenwärtigen Dungs. Ofili zog sich halbwegs gut aus der Kontroverse, sein Werk aber blieb als blasphemisch gebrandmarkt.

Der New Yorker Bürgermeister Rudolph Giuliani, der das Werk zwar im Katalog gesehen hatte, aber nicht in der Ausstellung, bezeichnete als "krankes Zeug" und drohte damit, die jährlichen $ 7 Millionen Finanzhilfe aus dem Rathaus dem Brooklyn Museum zu streichen. Seiner Meinung nach hatte das Museum nicht das Recht, mit staatlicher Unterstützung die Religion von anderen herabzusetzen. Kardinal John O'Connor, der Erzbischof von New York, sagte: "Man muss sich fragen, ob es ein Angriff auf die Religion selbst ist", und der Präsident der größten amerikanischen Gruppe orthodoxer Juden, Mandell Ganchrow, nannte sie "zutiefst beleidigend". William A. Donohue, Präsident der Katholischen Liga für religiöse und bürgerliche Rechte, sagte, das Werk rufe Abscheu hervor. FUCKING KUNST ist eine Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Kunst, die Künstler ermutigt, sich ohne jegliche Zensur und Unterdrückung der Meinungsfreiheit auszudrücken.

Spring has come, and has finally made the beautiful gallery space at Flutgraben warm enough to invite you there to join us for a performance by Lan Hungh. We begin the Flutgraben season next Monday, April 12 at Flutgraben e.V., Am Flutgraben 3, 12435 Berlin (U Schlesisches Tor, S Treptower Park). The gallery is on the third floor, and we hope to see you there. Doors open at 19.30, the performance begins roughly around 20.00.
